The estate consists of the donkey grounds, the camp stretch and the accessible Stonehill Park. You’ll find camping spots on both sides of the path at the Olive Tree Plateau (with sanitary building), the Eucalyptus/Pool Area and the Green Field at the end of the path. On the grounds you’ll find several waterpoints and drying racks for your wash (please don’t hang anything in or on our trees, they are reserved for olive growth, the birds and the bees). We have recognisable spots with electricity integrated into the natural landscape setting. You can set up on available spots, with respect to others and the grounds. We limit the number of occupied spots allowing everyone to pick a preferred spot and enjoy the peace and tranquility of this unique, still unspoiled region. ## Frequently Asked Questions We have a 7.20-metre motorhome, can you accommodate us? Sorry, NO. We only accommodate vehicles up to 6.99 metres. Our natural park simply isn’t suitable for larger vehicles. Apart from the physical limitations, Campscape is for guests who love small-scale camping and blending into an astonishing landscape. Bigger motorhomes simply don’t fit the scenery we want to preserve: a true alternative to traditional campsites and camper parks. No exceptions! I have a campervan for a reason, why can´t I go driving? When you stay with us, you choose to stay parked at your beautiful spot with the campervan or vehicle you sleep in. Our Campscape is about camping in nature, not parking in nature. We’re not going to debate the reasons — you either get it or you don’t, and you either agree or you don’t. If you don’t agree, please don’t book and don’t show up at our gate just for the sake of discussion! Do you offer pitches and rates for overwintering and season pithes? No, we don’t. We are simply not that type of campsite. From January 2 onwards, you are welcome to spend some time here in winter, but we have a maximum stay of 4 weeks and we do not offer low-cost wintering rates. Why is making an online reservation cheaper than just showing up? Very simply put: it saves both you and us a lot of time — and sometimes frustration. When people know where they’re going (including our concept and rules) and are already registered, the whole check-in process and stay become smoother and friendlier. When guests arrive unannounced looking for a camping spot, all the explanations and paperwork take much more time — and can become frustrating, especially when people treat us like a standard anonymous campsite. That’s why booking in advance is cheaper than simply showing up. Why are children under 16 not allowed? We prefer to offer a setting that isn’t centred around traditional family life, but naturally appeals to people looking for a different kind of camping experience. Families with young children have plenty of suitable campsites in the region — ours simply isn’t one of them. And once you experience the pool beneath the eucalyptus trees, overlooking the castle in complete silence, you’ll understand why. Is it a gay Campscape? No, Campscape itself isn’t gay — but we are. We pride ourselves on providing a safe and friendly home away from home for everyone, where people can enjoy nature, peace, space and the freedom to be themselves. We welcome non-heteronormative lifestyles and celebrate diversity — life would be painfully boring without it. But we’re not into woke activism. We speak our minds freely, respect different opinions, and try to learn from each other. Are you a Campscape for naturists? Well, if you ended up in the FAQ to find out whether we’re a naturist campsite, you probably hoped we were one. Or maybe you misunderstood the adults-only part… naughty, naughty thoughts. There was once a couple who camped all the way at the back. When they left, they still believed Campscape was a naturist campsite. But it isn’t. So here’s the rule, simple and clear: no public nudity. (That doesn’t mean no nudity anywhere on the campsite when you have complete privacy. Use your imagination wisely.) Why do you have a minimum stay of 2 nights? Our minimum stay of 2 nights helps us maintain the atmosphere we want to create. Campscape is a place to slow down, enjoy nature, the surroundings and the company of other guests. A constant flow of one-night arrivals and departures would have too much impact on the peaceful and sociable atmosphere we value. To protect the peace and keep traffic to a minimum, we don’t accept guests who are basically looking for a quick one-night stop, a much-needed shower, water refill or dump station. Can we have a campfire or barbecue at our camping spot? No, because of the fire hazard in this part of Portugal and Spain, barbecues on coal and open fires are not allowed on the estate. Barbecues on gas are allowed. Where is the nearest grocery store? The nearest local grocery store is in Santo António das Areias (5 km). There is a modern supermarket ‘Pingo Doce’ in Castelo de Vide (8,5 km). Ask for ways to get there. Do you accept discount cards? No. There is a maze of camping organisations across Europe that (often at a cost and with an administrative burden for us) offer small price benefits through discount schemes. We do not participate in these schemes. We prefer guests to visit Campscape because they are genuinely drawn to our little paradise in the unique region of Alto Alentejo, not because of a discount. Do I need an adapter to use the electricity at my camping spot? Yes, you need a CEE adapter to use standard European plugs at your spot. You can add one to your booking or rent one when you arrive (€1 per day). Electricity (up to 10 kWh) is included in your stay, so please use it freely. At Kiosk Amsterdão you can also charge your phone, laptop and other devices. Do you have a fridge and cooking facilities for guests? No, sorry we don’t. We have a limited number of cool boxes available to borrow (first come, first served). And you are welcome to freeze your own ice packs in the freezer at Kiosk Amsterdão. Kiosk and Terras Amsterdão is our self-service bar, where you’ll find cold drinks, coffee, and a little moment of indulgence, conversation, and connection whenever you feel like it. Please bring your own cooking equipment if you want to prepare your own meals. I don't agree with your rules ... That’s totally okay, and there are a couple of campsites nearby that will probably suit you just fine. So please don’t come here. It would be awkward if we had to send you away. And please, don’t send us emails or WhatsApp messages — or even worse, call us — asking for exceptions to our rules. How did you find this place? Where do you go when you travel? Do you miss Amsterdam? Do you ever regret your move? Do the Portuguese accept you, you know, being… you know? What’s the temperature here in winter? Why a saltwater pool and where do you get the saltwater from? Do you have a lot of friends here?** These sometimes very personal questions arise, we think, from disassociation. People suddenly find themselves in a totally detached and ancient landscape, yet are hosted by a married, mixed-race gay couple from Amsterdam (and originally São Paulo). Two cosmopolitan city boys in the apparently empty, fairytale-like border region of Portugal and Spain. No, we aren’t nature freaks, don’t grow our own vegetables. We don’t do or know anything about permaculture. In the very beginning, we were even scared of our own donkeys. We don’t do anything holistic (as far as we know), no gong or scent therapy (other than cattle bells and the smell of eucalyptus trees). We can barely distinguish a hoopoe from a sparrow, let alone that we know the names of all the trees and plants on our estate. We don’t do yoga, and for relaxation, we drop some drops of our enriched homegrown olive oil. We don’t even like camping and certainly aren’t fans of campsites. ![](https://campscapebeiramarvao.com/wp-content/uploads/donkey-1-1024x306.jpeg) **Traveling** To already start answering one question: we don’t travel anymore. Our joy is to close the gates now and then, enjoy our beautiful estate, do some necessary landscaping without being ambushed by questions. (Every three months, we drive a water truck to the Atlantic coast to take in some saltwater.) But rest assured, we have traveled enough in our lifetimes. Being a childless couple, we were never bound or limited by school holidays. So what everyone plans to do after retirement, we already did, in our prime. Don’t believe it? Here we go: we’ve traveled to all countries of Western and Southern Europe plus: Morocco, Kenya, Gambia, Cabo Verde, Tunisia, Turkey, Egypt, Ghana, South Africa (twice), Tanzania, Zanzibar, Israel, West Bank, Brazil (many times and all over), Suriname, Curaçao, Costa Rica, Panama, The Dominican Republic, Cuba, the United States (several times), Canada, Japan, China, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Bali (three times), Sri Lanka, New Zealand and Australia. Our travels were always about meeting people and avoiding busy tourist hotspots. We didn’t chase monuments — monuments don’t drink wine with you at midnight or tell bad jokes over breakfast. We chased people. Grabbing opportunities to get to know, enjoy, and taste daily local life, with its (often hidden and unknown) pleasures. I mean, how many castles, cathedrals, temples, and excavations can you see? Our motto: what you don’t know, you can’t miss! Our FOMO (fear of missing out) was coming home with photos of all the must-see spots (which are exactly the same as those in the travel brochures) and not with the stories and adventures we had with newly made local friends. Sure, we did see many attractions, visited beautiful beaches, went parasailing from Table Mountain, got our scuba license in Bali… but these were never the highlights of our trips. ![](https://campscapebeiramarvao.com/wp-content/uploads/chute-1-1024x527.jpeg) In 2014, we stumbled upon our favourite travel trick: delivering other people’s brand-new motorhomes across continents. You pick up a motorhome (often brand new) at the factory and have a couple of weeks to drive it to its destination. Our first trip was from Minneapolis to San Francisco—a 23-day trip that led us to many amazing national parks and offered a constant change of scenery and experiences. We weren’t limited by any itinerary or prior knowledge about the places we would cross. We just used our eyes and ears, ready to explore and seize opportunities as they came. What an eye-opening trip that was! We never stayed more than one night at a campsite, but on that one night, we often got caught up in deep, exploratory and entertaining conversations with fellow travelers. **Time and Space** I’m a human geographer, once specialized in recreation (now replaced by tourism and commercial leisure), town planning (replaced by project-driven capitalism), and city marketing (which, luckily, is still unknown in Marvão): **I ❤️ Marvão** The basis of human geography is that every person can only be in one spot at one time. Everyone has their own time-space path, which results from personal characteristics, preferences, opportunities and constraints. Things get really interesting when individual time-space paths coincide and interact, creating… opportunities! This was my job in Amsterdam, where I operated in the schizophrenic relationship between social policies and urban planning. My eventual burnout in Amsterdam (did I already mention that we’re in Portugal because of my burnout?) was partly caused by my lifelong fight for urban planning that focusses on shaping conditions for interaction instead of creating even more constraints for those with limited access to urban opportunities, resources, goods, services and knowledge. Road-tripping was so nice that in the following years, we also did relocations of campervans from the Ducato factory in Italy to London, then one in West Canada, another in the States from Minneapolis to Miami, and again one from Florence to London. In New Zealand, we drove from the Southern to the Northern Island, as everyone did the opposite. ![](https://campscapebeiramarvao.com/wp-content/uploads/canada-1-1024x682.jpeg) Being on the road amidst beautiful, often empty landscapes and crossing time-space paths with so many interesting (non-metropolitan-oriented) people who were not driven by the shortsighted search for never-ending (economic) growth brought us all kinds of new insights. **Burn-out** So, I got a burnout at the end of COVID while working on the spatial plan for Amsterdam 2050. I’m still thankful to the urban planner who wrote the opening sentence: *“COVID has shown how crucial it is that Amsterdam is part of the global economic network.”* Well, I never got over that one. To me it was obvious that COVID showed how crucially important the immediate living environment is for the social, physical, and mental wellbeing of its citizens. But, money over humans, so … hello BURN-OUT. I just couldn’t live anymore in, or work for, a city that was heading for the capitalist abyss. And mind you, this was all happening under the most left-wing administration Amsterdam ever had. The elite were imposing their lifestyles on people (lifestyle interventions), and were celebrating average statistics as a goal to achieve for all. Differences are okay as long as you participate in raising productivity. LGBTQIA+: let’s put everyone in a box with a capital letter to eventually argue that all boxes are equal. What the fuck! Why raise my sexual preference and argue that I’m part of a gay community? Well, I better stop here… It’s probably obvious that I was suffering from a severe burnout. (Being gay is -in our experience- a non-issue for the Portuguese, and most of all a private matter. Certainly not something to raise or talk about.) When I got a call that I had to do a reintegration trajectory to get me back into productivity, my state of mind got even worse. Vitor saw my fight and desperation — he had to save me. First, he showed me a castle in France that was for sale, then a naturist campsite in France. And as I just had to escape the suffocating metropolitan urge for growth, the enormous complexity of every discussed subject, the relentless impulses of metropolitan life, and the constant weighing of words to stay politically correct, I was seeking and needing total seclusion to re-create myself and rebuild the free and untroubled Ronald I once was. ![](https://campscapebeiramarvao.com/wp-content/uploads/paris-1-1024x461.jpeg) Inspired by Vitor, I found a website called *camping-te-koop.com* (campsites for sale). I sorted by price, and yes indeed, the cheapest one was Camping Beira Marvão. So, almost four months into my burnout, we drove illegally to Portugal to visit the campsite—and actually also to buy the place. An oasis in the middle of an amazing but apparently deserted landscape. We both immediately felt the positive energy on the estate and a sense of coming home. The only problem was that it was a rather unsuccessful transit campsite. Within six months after I called in sick, we had quit our jobs, sold our house in metropolitan woke Amsterdam, and became campsite owners in one of the most beautiful but poorest and unknown regions of Portugal. Never waste a good mental breakdown! **Recreation… re-creation? Recreation time is something everybody needs for a healthy balance and wellbeing. For most people—74% of Europeans live in urban areas—recreation is associated with staying in (mostly man-made) nature, getting away from too many, constant, and uncontrollable incentives. But just as much, recreation is about social quality time feeding connection and reflection. We all need both ends of the spectrum. The first months at the campsite were exhausting. As the word spread, we got very busy: two huggable Dutch/Brazilian gays, one even Black, settled on a campsite in Marvão. We were ticking quite a few diversity boxes in the politically correct aftermath of the COVID period. Our renovated and renamed Terras Amsterdão was filled with drinking and smoking… Dutchmen. And actually, I didn’t recover from my burnout—it deepened. I was still having the same conversations, still confronted with breastfeeding coordinators, and discussing problems of faraway countries measured by Dutch standards. And… the Alto Alentejo wasn’t empty at all. Both campsites in our vicinity were owned by gays, and there was already a huge group of European immigrants organizing yoga and pizza parties, putting a claim on us to become part of their… world-bettering “community” of nature-loving, self-sufficient, holistic, permacultural expats who were unknowingly initiating the first phase of gentrification of rural Portugal. Camping Beira Marvão was a transit campsite for (often big shiny white) motorhomes filled with pensionados who mostly stayed one night on their way to the Algarve. The biggest goal they had visiting Serra de São Mamede Nature Park was… satellite reception. ![](https://campscapebeiramarvao.com/wp-content/uploads/satelite-1-1-1024x411.jpeg) **Turning point After the initial success, it became very quiet. We aren’t on a main road, and the only reason some drove the extra mile was the discount card from one of the 20 campsite organisations the campsite was associated with. Burn-out squared! And that’s the point where we -inspired by our roadtrips- adopted ‘less’ as a goal—to become a refuge in a world focused on always more, more, more. To not compete on price with fellow campsites, to turn this place into a destination for the few instead of a parking spot for the many. The first thing we did was quit almost all camping organizations and remove our phone number and email from as many sites as possible. Then we introduced a minimum stay of two nights (judging the reviews apparently illegal in France). After a year, we became adults-only (Portuguese outrage!). We became a Campscape: an escape from campsites. From year three on, we only offer spots for tents, caravans, and campervans smaller than seven meters (it doesn’t matter whether you stay in the middle of nature when you’re at the same time surrounded by white walls of motorhomes that go out driving during the daytime — so we forbid that too). And you know what? We became a place for recreation instead of tourism or hasty commercial leisure. ![](https://campscapebeiramarvao.com/wp-content/uploads/recreation-1-1024x346.jpeg) **The Portuguese Connection It was at least 30 years ago that I read about regression therapy. And as I (still) am afraid of heights, I treated myself to a session, open to any previous lives I had. The therapist whispered me into a kind of trance and asked me where I was. Surprisingly I heard myself describe myself as a kid wearing a brown jellaba with primitive sandals playing games with other kids. We were at a small dusty square in a clifftop village playing soccer with an object that wasn’t a football. At one point, I chased the object, hit a small knee-high stonewall at the edge of the square, lost my balance, and fell into the rocky abyss … Dead! Hence my fear of heights. In 2021, Vitor and I went to explore Marvão and its castle. We walked the narrow streets and followed the village walls. Just after the last houses, but before the castle, I felt as if I was struck by lightning. I was unable to move or speak. And although it wasn’t part of our conversation (for the last 25 years), I suddenly heard Vitor say: *Maybe it was here…* And we both knew what he was referring to: I was at the exact spot where I, as a Moorish kid, fell off the wall and died. *![](https://campscapebeiramarvao.com/wp-content/uploads/0579020c78143c72813905103d8c9e8a35d6e690ed657bb3861281f35b63377a.png)* We went to the health center to register and meet Doctor José, who speaks English. “Welcome Vitor and Ronald!” Huh, how do you know us? “Everybody knows you, welcome to Marvão!” But we’re here only one week, and we don’t know anybody yet! “Yes, but everybody does know you! Welcome to Marvão!” I told him about my burn-out and my dislike of antidepressants (which already made me a zombie once). “Get up early, work, walk, be active!” After some small talk with Vitor, he looked me in the eye again and and slowly slid two prescriptions across the table . “I have looked you in the eye, and if you want: this one is for immediate panic relief, and that one for long-term recovery.” When I got home, I checked with a physician who was camping at the estate: interesting choice, and no antidepressants. **RAIA** The Spanish are the extroverted Iberians, the Portuguese the introverted ones. We live right in between: ‘A Raia’ (on the borderline). Marvão is sometimes called “A Raia Alentejana” and offers a blend of Portuguese and Spanish influences in cuisine, music and festivals. The Portuguese tourism boards are enthusiastically promoting the Raia region’s traditions and folklore… but exclusively in Portuguese, and only to the same 3.9 million Portuguese who already enjoy that sort of ancient leisure. Meanwhile, they completely overlook the 252 million English-speaking Europeans living in urban jungles, people who are desperate for the deafening silence and boundless emptiness of the Raia as an antidote to metropolitan madness — and who might, incidentally, also be willing to pay for that privilege. The Raia receives €320 million from the EU among other things for “cultural heritage and sustainable tourism” — a goal that, judging by their language-locked marketing and their steadfast refusal to answer my emails in English, apparently means “keep the foreigners out.” I have to say, I admire the commitment to the cause. Sustainability translated to *Don´t do it!* ![](https://campscapebeiramarvao.com/wp-content/uploads/sao-1-724x1024.jpeg) Understandable from a cultural history perspective: every Raian thought or answer is a bit bipolar: (countless) actionable words, but “Amanha de manha” (tomorrow morning). They bring us posters about activities in the area, but the information is only available in Portuguese. So everything (fortunately) stays as it is and has been for centuries. No mass tourism, no McDonald’s, NO ENGLISH (although almost every Portuguese under 45 speaks it). It’s actually admirable that they keep the hooded processions for the many Saints to themselves. And as they’re heavily subsidised, they don’t really need the tourism; festivals are free, and the entry fee for the castle is €1.50 (but only when someone is actually present at the entrance booth). Yes, we have Portuguese friends, but we don’t visit them—we just accidentally meet them at the supermarket (or hire them to do some work). I’m also a Raiano, I know how to sell our Campscape, but at the same time, I limit access to paradise to the happy few. Life-changing, because in your time-space path, there’s no such thing as travelling backwards. No, we’ve never regretted our move. In the beginning I was afraid I would miss the stories and diversity of people we met along the way. But now, we’re hosting a lively mix of diverse and international visitors — each bringing their own time-space stories to share. We created our own judgement-free Amsterdão, where it can be chilly, but never below zero. Where the wintersun is just as warming as the summer one. Schist and granite rose and pressed against one another, creating the rugged backbone that still defines the landscape today. Later, subsurface magma injections hardened into quartz veins, while tectonic shifts carved valleys and lifted ridges. Over millions of years, erosion softened the harsh outlines, leaving behind the dramatic escarpments of Marvão and the fertile pockets of soil in the valleys below. That ancient geology is not just a silent backdrop. It dictates everything. Schist soils, thin and stony, favor olive trees, cork oaks, and vines that thrive on hardship. Granite soils, by contrast, hold water longer and give rise to chestnut groves, vegetable gardens, and wildflower meadows. It is first and foremost our home, where we enjoy a relaxed and simple way of life in these beautiful surroundings.** **Therefore, we have some conditions that may differ from traditional campsites and camper parks. The name Marvão is believed to come from Ibn Marwan, a 9th-century Moorish nobleman who founded a fortress here, giving the village its historic identity. **Festa do Castanheiro (Marvão): 14-15 November** Celebration of Marvão’s chestnut heritage with roasted chestnuts, local gastronomy, wine, crafts, music and a lively autumn atmosphere in the historic hilltop village. #### Restaurants You are very welcome to join our communal homecooked dinner on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, lovingly prepared by your host Vitor (when he feels like cooking). If dinner is not available, we recommend the following restaurants: **Jardim de Borboleta (4,5 km Santo António das Arreias): Thursday-Sunday** Our favourite! Vegan soul food in a warm and pleasant scenery. Christina runs her cozy restaurant from Thursday till Sunday. Come for delicious vegan soul food, a drink and Christina’s famous cakes. Visit Portagem with it’s Roman bridge and free swimming pool in the river Sever. When you don´t have a car or electric bicycle, you can make use of our taxi-service. We will drive you up, so you can have a beautiful descending walk back to the Campscape.![](https://campscapebeiramarvao.com//wp-content/uploads/2022/02/camping-77-300x225.jpeg) Marvao (7 km) is absolutely worth a visit. With an altitude of more than 800 meters, the (original Moorish) castle towers over the landscape and is visible from all angles. Within the castle walls you’ll find this small village with white houses (and only 80 inhabitants). It is well visible from our estate, especially at night when it’s lit. Also with a castle, but also with shops, bars, restaurants and a big supermarket (Pingo Doce). Special feature is the old Jewish quarter with its beautiful fountain and its medieval small streets. Visit the Jewish museum, the cathedral and have a taste of the traditional Portugese lifestyle. ![](https://campscapebeiramarvao.com//wp-content/uploads/2022/02/IMG_4510-300x225.jpeg)Beira is just a 3,5 km walk or bike ride and used to be the border station on the railway from Madrid to Lisbon. The old station is preserved in all its beauty, and there is the possibility to go for a rail bike on the tracks. At the highest point of Beira you find the central washing place, typical in this part of Portugal. You’ll pass old cork oaks, stone oaks, olive groves mixed with all kinds of fruit trees and of course the herds of sheeps and cows (hear their bells) in a rocky environment. Enjoy the rich flora and fauna in this microclimate. Be aware that the landscape is quite hilly, especially when visiting the castle villages of Marvao (at an altitude of 800m) and Castelo the Vide (600 m) – our estate lies on an altitude of 400 meter. However the small town of Beira is an almost flat walk right from our kiosk. An electric bike is recommended for those who like a relaxed touring experience. But the landscape is also perfect for those who like a challenge, running or (mountain)biking. At kiosk Amsterdao you’ll find a collection of routes. Or just start walking and explore the countryside by yourself, following your own senses. Follow the unpaved paths that lead to old hamlets with central fountains and washing facilities. --- ### [How long should we stay?](https://campscapebeiramarvao.com/activity/howlong/) **Published:** February 25, 2020 **Author:** Roon **Content:** Guests who visit us for the first time are often in transit to or from the more obvious touristic destinations (Algarve and Silvercoast) and book just two nights (because that’s the minimum stay). But that is just not enough … Many of them just need one night under the stars, one morning of waking up with the birds, one day of soaking up the abundantly available recovering energy to appear for a cappuccino in the morning and ask “Can we stay a bit longer?” That’s fine of course. But there are also guests who – after joining in paradise – would really, really like to stay longer but can’t. They already booked the next campsite/accommodation, have to meet up friends elsewhere, or are in a hurry to get back home. That’s why we like to warn and advise you. Two nights are just not enough, not enough for recuperation, not enough for romance, not enough for exploring this amazingly rich rural border region. You install yourself at your spacious camping spot and explore the estate, with its diverse micro habitats full of birds and plants. You might like to chill in our heated pool. Almost all of our guests do the flat 7 km landscape hike to the old railway station of Beira, with the possibility of a halfway lunch at a real Alentejan restaurant. The bikers can do the 25 km long megalithic bike route along the Spanish border taking you through an amazing landscape with Anta’s and Menhirs. In the afternoon you return to the Campscape, where relaxation is guaranteed. In the evening you meet your new made friends at Amsterdao and together we’ll welcome our new guests with whom you can already share some tips and experiences. ![](https://campscapebeiramarvao.com/wp-content/uploads/reviews-6-1024x767.jpeg) On day 3 you wake up heavily but happily numbed but at the same time strangely energetic. After the morning swim you hike, bike or grab a taxi to Marvao at 800 meter altitude (luckily we are already at 400 m). You expected tourism at the walled village with its huge castle, but the silence is breathtaking. You’ll enjoy a wonderful view over Spain and Portugal with the Serra da Estrella in the distance. And when you’re lucky you see a group of enormous vultures or an eagle, from above! Time to settle with a book in the shade of the Eucalyptus trees. Take a swim. Just turning your camping chair 90 degrees will give you a totally different view of the landscape. Dushi passes now and then to keep you company and play a bit. Wonder through this lively village with its castle, medieval Jewish quarter, pubs and restaurants. When you love walking and/or cycling, there are many trips and routes you can take. Visit lakes and rivers (want a private beach?), or plan an activity with our partners in the area. Bike on the old train track, go supping or kayaking. When you’re camping with a tent or a caravan and have a car, the possibilities are endless: visit waterfalls, villages in the Spanish Extremadura and the wonderful Portuguese city of Elvas etc. etc. You can easily spend several weeks with us, as the perfect counterbalance for your busy daily life. Early mornings during the spring are magical, with a dawn chorus of singing Hoopoes, Golden Orioles, Serins, Blackcaps, Nightingales and Thekla Larks providing a backdrop for the Red-rumped Swallows, Swallows, House Martins, Crag Martins, Alpine Swifts and Pallid Swifts that grace the skies above the campsite. ![](https://campscapebeiramarvao.com/wp-content/uploads/vogels-3-1024x683.jpeg) Azure-winged Magpies can be heard and seen daily as they move through or over the campsite to and from their favoured feeding and roosting sites, along with a few Ravens. As the day warms up it is always worth scanning the sky for birds of prey. Griffon Vultures, Booted and Short-toed Eagles and Black Kites are regular but with a bit of luck and some patience, Black Vulture and Bonelli’s, Golden and Spanish Imperial Eagles can be seen too. ![](https://campscapebeiramarvao.com/wp-content/uploads/vogels-1.jpeg) Sardinian and Subalpine Warblers inhabit the scrubbier bits in and around the site and Melodious Warblers can be seen and heard in the taller trees. Chaffinch, Serin and Goldfinch are a constant feature and Blue Tits and Nuthatches can be seen searching for food amongst the many olive trees. ![](https://campscapebeiramarvao.com/wp-content/uploads/vogels-2-1024x732.jpeg) Rufous Bushchat is a very scarce bird in Portugal but does occur in and around the campsite but can be very secretive, this is also the case with Black Storks but they do breed in the area and do occasionally fly over the site. ![](https://campscapebeiramarvao.com/wp-content/uploads/vogels-5-1-1024x683.jpeg) Tawny and Little Owls often join the singing Nightingales during the hours of darkness and the ultra-secretive Quail can also be heard along with the odd Scops Owl. ![](https://campscapebeiramarvao.com/wp-content/uploads/vogels-4-1024x732.jpeg) Time spent looking and listening out for birds in and around the campsite can be very rewarding, with 50 species of bird possible without going far from your tent, caravan or motorhome – all within some of the most breath-taking scenery the Serra De Marmede national park has to offer.
